Perched on top of a hill, Montepulciano is a medieval town of
rare beauty which, without a doubt, will make you feel in the
truest Tuscany. A village of Etruscan origin with elegant
Renaissance palaces, little squares, ancient churches and
historic cellars, which you can discover during this tour. Its
strategic position between Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana makes
it the ideal place from which to discover this magnificent area.
The beauty of these small villages is that they are all very
close one to the other and it will be a real pleasure to me, to
be able to combine 2 visits in the same day.
My advice is to combine a visit in Montepulciano and then
Pienza, located a few kms away and visible from the "Sasso di
Montepulciano" or rather, from the Fortress of the town. The
village of Montepulciano has very ancient roots and, even today,
we do not know its history so well or rather the dating of its
origins, so much so that new discoveries continue to be made ...
The beauty of finding ancient water cisterns where today the
seat of the "Consorzio del Vino Nobile" is really suggestive.
I'm waiting for you to discover our treasures but, please,
remember to wear comfortable shoes and suitable clothing,
because the streets of Montepulciano are uphill.
The guided tour of Pienza takes us to the beautiful Val
d'Orcia, among fabulous landscapes and gently undulating
hills. Thanks to the great humanist Enea Silvio Piccolomini,
who later became Pope Pius II, the village is known as the
"ideal" city of the Renaissance. Piccolomini had the knowledge
and the economic possibilities to be able to transform the
native village of Corsignano into a utopian city, which was
supposed to embody the principles and philosophy of the
classical age and of the great Italian Renaissance.
Under the guidance of Leon Battista Alberti, in just three
years the project was carried out by the architect Bernardo
Gambarelli, known as Rossellino, with the creation of
beautiful buildings that you will be able to see during the
guided tour of Pienza: the papal residence of Palazzo
Piccolomini , the Municipality Palace, the Cathedral and the
splendid central square, Piazza Pio II, a space of great
harmony that gives solemnity to the surrounding buildings. On
one side of the square you can admire a beautiful well, known
as the "well of dogs".
The ideal city of Pope Pius II will never become a big city
and, compared to Montepulciano, it is territorially much less
extensive. However, if you look closely, Pienza is really a
small pearl set in the evocative landscape of the Val d'Orcia
and of truly unique beauty... I invite you to come with me to
discover the little details that make this village a
magnificent place!
